Winter is a Great Time to Get Your Deck Quote

Why get your deck quote in winter? Great things take time! If you want to be one of the first to enjoy a brand-new deck this Spring, now is the time to get an estimate. Getting your new deck estimate now gives you time to design your deck the way you want to use it, decide on a contractor, and to work out financing BEFORE you start missing out on spring afternoons in the backyard! Have your contractor bring sample boards to you or schedule a visit to his showroom. Take your time selecting a color or a combination of colors and options that fit your needs and budget without feeling rushed. Talk to contractors now and get on the books for early Spring with the company you really want to use instead of whichever company happens to have availability left in their schedule. Knowing the cost of your deck project with all of the options that you really want ahead of time gives you time to plan financially. Getting an estimate now gives you time to save to make sure you get the deck that you really want! Other things to Consider with Your Deck Quote Lighting: Have your contractor quote lighting in your estimate! Lighting can be incorporated in deck rails, stair risers, and can be used to accent areas of interest. It is much easier and less expensive to have lighting installed during the original framing of the deck rather than to retrofit. RainEscape: Trex makes a product called RainEscape which works like a trough and gutter system for raised decks to keep rain, spills and snowmelt from falling between the deck boards and allows for dry usage of the area under the deck, such as a walkout patio. Deck Furniture: Deck furniture is an expense that can be easily overlooked when pricing out your project. Once you decide on a deck size, it would be a good to start shopping deck furniture and incorporate it into your budget. Deck Board Curves and Designs: Ask your contractor how you can incorporate curved deck boards, contrasting colors, pergolas, benches, or flowerboxes into your deck design to ensure that you have an original style that will be the envy of your neighborhood! If you have not yet had your new Trex deck built and would like to wait until Spring, there’s still time to get an estimate and reserve your spot to have your deck built as soon as the weather breaks in Spring! 10 Great Materials for your Beautiful New Countertop

Quartz: “Quartz” countertops are actually an engineered stone product generally consisting of up to 93” quartz particles and 7% acrylics, fillers, and resins. Engineered stone is slightly less glossy than granite, but can bring the same upscale look and it doesn’t require sealing. The same process used to create quartz countertops is also being used to create recycled glass countertops, which can be very pricey. Granite: Natural stone remains a timeless option for kitchen countertops. Natural stone goes with anything and makes any kitchen seem luxurious. Granite does require a bit of maintenance as it needs periodic sealing to prevent staining and moisture absorption, but the only thing difficult about sealing your granite is remembering to do it! The cost of granite countertops has fallen quite a bit in recent years to be more competitive with the increasing popularity of engineered stone countertops. Soapstone: Another natural stone, soapstone is usually dark gray to green or bluish in color with a soft feel. The stone does age or “patina” over time and is prone to scratching which is considered to add to its charm. It’s often seen in historic homes but is also used in more modern kitchens. Soapstone is maintained with mineral oil. Marble: Yet another natural stone that is seeing a resurgence going into 2020 is marble. The large veining is very popular in today’s kitchen designs. Marble can be very expensive and requires regular upkeep. Marble is softer and more porous than granite, but newer sealers can help reduce the amount of maintenance required. Many kitchen designers opt to recommend an engineered stone with veining to mimic the look of marble. Solid Surface: Acrylic countertops, such as Dupont’s Corian, have been around for several decades and have lost ground in popularity as other materials offer more benefits for similar cost. Solid surface, although non-porous, scratches rather easily and has more “plastic” feel than stone. Solid surface can also be easily damaged by hot pans. Ceramic Tile: Ceramic tile countertops are durable and easier to clean than they used to be thanks to more stain-resistant grout. They’re easy for DIYers to construct and the range of color and pattern options is endless. Tiles can be brittle, however, and not immune to cracks and breaks and they don’t look as classy as stone. Laminate: Laminate countertops, such as Formica or Wilsonart, are essentially plastic-coated layers of paper pattern on a particleboard (MDF) substrate. They can be purchased made-to-size as special order in thousands of color / pattern options or purchased pre-fabricated to be cut-to-size on site from your local home store. This is a very inexpensive option and may be viewed as low-end should you try to sell your home with laminate countertops installed. The seams are always visible and damage is practically impossible to repair. Wood or Butcher Block: Available in a range of wood species, colors, and finishes, wood or butcher block countertops add warmth to modern kitchens. They can be sanded and resealed as necessary and last a very long time if cared for properly. They can be expensive and easily damaged by knives. If not properly maintained, bacteria can be a problem, as well as cracking if the wood is not oiled and sealed often. Stainless Steel: Modern style kitchens often showcase stainless steel countertops. They are impervious to heat damage and are regarded as a “premium” option. Of all the countertop materials available, this is said to be the easiest to clean. However, it is expensive to fabricate, noisy, and can be easily scratched. Concrete: Great for countertops in interesting shapes or if you want something completely unique, concrete countertops can be color tinted, acid-stained, and made to look exotic and unusual. They are custom made, so can be very expensive. They are generally polished, so they don’t appear like the concrete used to make sidewalks, but they are still porous and require sealing. Cracking may occur over time. Check out our site to see some of our previous work, then set up your free estimate! https://www.ddthomepros.com/contact/ – or just phone 630-200-3945 to schedule!

Deck Resurfacing: A Great Way to Give your Decking the Fresh Look or Upgrade It Needs

Wood decks can be cost-efficient to build initially, but maintenance costs over time add to the final cost of a deck. If you currently have a wood deck, you are probably already aware of the maintenance that they require. As the deck boards age, they dry out, change color due to exposure to the sun and other environmental factors, and the deck will require staining and / or sealing annually to avoid stains from fallen leaves or other debris. Wood deck boards also wear and break down causing cracking and splintering. So, what are the options for renewing your aging wood deck once the boards have reached the end of their usable life? Build a new deck. If the deck was poorly maintained and the substructure is unsafe or doesn’t meet local building code, this may be your best option. You can choose to build a new wood deck for the least relative cost and start the cycle over again, or you could choose to upgrade to a composite decking material. This option would cost more money up front, but you will enjoy years of maintenance free use. A less expensive and faster option is to resurface your existing wood deck with new composite deck boards and railings. This option is great if you are happy with the size and shape of your deck, would like to benefit from the maintenance free properties of composite deck boards and railings, and you have had your deck substructure inspected by a licensed professional. This option also saves you money! Deck resurfacing can be done in a matter of days and often does not require a building permit! Here is how deck it works.. First, your contractor will remove all existing deck boards and handrails. Repairs, if necessary, will be made to ensure your existing substructure is free from damage and meets current building codes. Existing stairs will almost always need to be reframed due to installation requirements of composite decking. For example, Trex requires stair stringers be installed 12” on center as opposed to 16” – 18”on center for pressure treated boards. New wood posts will be installed for the new railing system. Then, the new composite deck boards will be installed over the existing frame. New fascia board will be installed around the perimeter of the deck. Finally, the railing systems will be installed to complete the project. Your renewed deck is now ready to provide years of maintenance free enjoyment! A consideration when having your existing deck resurfaced, is that while the deck boards are removed would be the ideal time to add a lighting package or Trex RainEscape to really upgrade your backyard living space! Lighting can provide accents and safety while RainEscape allows the space under your deck to be usable even during the rain by directing rain water from your deck above to a gutter system below. RainEscape is ideal for 2 nd story decks over a patio or walk out basement entrance. Take advantage of the early break in the weather! Get started today and enjoy the outdoor living season! Use Curves and Levels When You Design Your New Deck for Maximum Appeal and Best Use of Space

When you think of building a new deck, do you picture it square, rectangular, or maybe it has clipped corners? Or do you picture curves that flow with your landscaping and accentuate your patio furniture? If you want your deck to really stand out in your neighborhood and look progressive and different from the standard, consider adding curves to your deck design! There are several ways to incorporate curves to your design and discussing the options with your contractor is a great place to start! Add a soft curve to the front face of your deck. A simple way to add softness and a few extra square feet to your deck is to curve the entire front face of your deck. Curve the deck corners. Instead of clipped corners, design your deck with curved corners to really differentiate your deck from everyone else’s. Create an organic curved deck line. Use curves to incorporate landscaping and trees into your backyard living space. A classic kidney shaped deck front is much more interesting to look at than a square front and can help maximize and define outdoor living zones such as eating and relaxing by curving to complement your patio furniture. Use curved deck board inlays in your deck board layout. One way to add a real pop of visual interest to your deck is using a contrasting or complementing deck board inlay in your deck board layout. Curving the deck board inlay really makes it stand out as custom and original. Use curves of varying sizes for multi-level decks. Curving each level of your multi-level deck with differing degrees of curvature and sizing can make your deck appear more complex and interesting. You can also use this as a tool to help define spaces. Use a more circular curve for a round patio table and use a broader organic curve for lounge furniture. Curve the deck railings too! Ask your contractor to curve the deck railings to match your decks curves! Curving the deck rails brings attention to the curves and makes them more noticeable when looking at your deck from the ground. Light up your curves! Use landscape and deck lighting to draw more attention to your decks curved features! Deck rail lights accent deck rails, landscape lighting make curved deck faces shine, and deck board up-lighting can draw attention to curved inlays and help define spaces. An Update on Pandemic Home Improvement Trends and Decking Supply Issues

COVID-19 has led to an increase in homeowner spending on home renovation projects including building new decks. Construction, in many areas, was exempted from stay-at-home orders as an essential business and with deck building allowing contractors to work outdoors while socially distancing, homeowners seem comfortable moving forward with this type of project. As COVID-19 continues to affect our daily lives and the building season has progressed, price and supply have become issues in getting deck projects completed.Since 2015, lumber prices have been sporadic. Rising and falling with supply and demand. Then the COVID-19 pandemic happened. Loggers curtailed the harvesting of softwood pine in the South anticipating lower demand due to the pandemic. With people placed under various stay-at-home orders, spending on family vacations was put on hold. Families received a check from the government. Stuck at home with a little extra cash and nowhere to go, home improvement projects became a popular way to productively pass the time. While shopping your local big box home improvement store, you may notice empty bays where bunks of lumber would normally be stored and staged for purchase. Due to the loggers slowing the harvest of the trees, lumber supply has become depleted. Although untreated lumber can be provided for purchase rather quickly, lumber was not being provided to treatment facilities in usual quantities, creating a shortage of pressure treated lumber. As a result of the shortage of pressure treated lumber, prices have risen 50% or more! Prices and supply are not expected to recover until winter when the deck season comes to a close. Pressure treated deck boards have become scarce and suppliers are unable to provide replenishment dates. Many homeowners then turn to composite deck boards such as Trex to try to get their deck projects completed. This shift from pressure treated to composite materials is now affecting the availability of composite deck boards. Trex is not able to release trucks of product fast enough to keep suppliers stocked with all of the materials necessary to build a deck in all of the available colors. Contractors are now finding it necessary to adjust building schedules to accommodate projects with materials that are available first, while other homeowners’ projects are being delayed, regardless of who purchased first. It sometimes becomes necessary for a contractor to source materials from multiple suppliers to get everything they need for a deck project. This is even further compounded with the lumber shortage, which is driving pricing and lead times further up and out. Extend your living space into the outdoors! The Best Strategy of Choosing the Right Decking Color for Your Home on Your Composite Dream Deck

Deciding to build a new deck or to resurface your existing deck with composite deck boards is a great way to utilize your backyard to the fullest! Working with a contractor on a design that works within your budget is especially important and once you are ready to move forward with your project, it is time to choose colors! The deck color that you choose should complement the existing colors of your home. You can choose a bold combination of style and colors and your deck will become the focus of your yard, or your deck can be simple and classic and blend into your outdoor living space. Selecting between a traditional, neutral color scheme and a bold multi-color scheme is a good place to start. If you are not sure which is the right choice for your home and yard, you can start by examining the overall design and shape of your dream deck. A custom design with curved boards, flared stairs, multiple levels, clipped corners, or any combination of these design elements, may be best suited for a simple, single-color deck board selection that works with your home’s color by blending in for an elegant presence or accenting with a single-color selection for a more glamorous appearance. A simpler square or rectangular deck could be made more interesting by using a two-color scheme with accenting perimeter boards, railings, and center boards, or an inlaid design. Personal preference, of course, is always the final deciding factor. Deck colors for a Beige House: Trying to find a deck color that exactly matches your beige siding is all but impossible. You do not want the deck to look as though you tried to match and “missed”. Alternatively, select colors in a medium brown color. Matching or black railings would look be very suitable in this color scheme. Deck colors for a White House: Any color scheme that you prefer will look amazing on a white house, so which do you choose! Should you opt for a deck with a complex design, light grey shades or soft neutral browns will not overpower the architectural interest of your deck. If you are looking to feature your deck as a focal point, then reds, rich browns, and golds would help your deck to stand out! Dress them up with bright white or two-tone railings to tie into the white siding! Deck colors for a Grey House: Grey siding continues to become increasingly popular and those grey tones can range from light to dark and warm taupe greys to cool blue greys. The most popular deck colors for grey houses include soft browns, reds, or multi-tonal options that vary in grey and brown tones that complement the grey siding. Black or white railings are equally impressive options here. It is always best to see a rendering of your deck in color so that you can visualize the final product in your head and see actual sample boards before you sign any papers. Brochures and internet pictures are not always perfect purveyors of color. Pay attention to the texture of the board as well, especially if looking at accenting colors. If you’re choosing a product with woodgrain embossing, you want to make sure that the embossing is consistent as even product lines within the same brand often do not have the same wood-grain patterns.
