How to Properly Maintain Your Trex Deck in Winter

Mild fall days are disappearing fast and at this point in the season, most people have moved to the much warmer and inviting

indoors. You probably won’t be thinking much of using your beautiful Trex deck until the arrival of Spring. Here are some tips for maintaining your deck through the harsh winter months so it will be ready to use in the Spring!

  • Before all of the mild days with temperatures above freezing disappear, thoroughly clean your Trex deck with mild soap and water. Be sure not to allow fallen leaves to sit on the deck for too long to avoid tannin residue on the deck boards that can be very difficult to remove. Fallen leaves can be simply removed with a broom or leaf blower.

  • Cover your patio furniture with fitted covers or tarps to keep all of your pieces looking fresh for spring. There’s nothing worse than having to scrub dirt and grime from exposed patio furniture after sitting unused all winter!

  • If you own an older generation Trex deck such as Trex “Accents”, you can use calcium chloride or rock salt on the deck boards, but it should be rinsed off as soon as possible. Take care to rinse off when temperatures are above freezing so as not to create a slip hazard.

  • Use caution to not scratch or gouge your older generation deck boards when removing snow or ice with a snow shovel. Never use a metal snow shovel or plastic shovel with a metal edge on an older generation deck.

  • To remove snow from Trex “Transcend”, “Enhance”, and “Select” decks, a plastic shovel is preferred over metal. Using a metal snow shovel or a plastic shovel with a metal edge always allows the opportunity to scratch or gouge your deck boards. Calcium chloride or rock salt may also be used to melt snow and ice from the deck surface.

If you have not yet had your new Trex deck built and would like to wait until Spring, there’s still time to get an estimate and reserve your spot to have your deck built as soon as the weather breaks in Spring!
